Just recognize that old age does not necessarily mean a feeble mind. She has seen and done things that you can't imagine. Instead of trying to beat her - talk to her. Ask her about what she did as a young girl. Who were her friends in school, what did she study, what subjects did she like/dislike? What was her first job, where did her family go for outings or vacation? You will be amazed at what you learn.

And afterwards, maybe she'll let you win at the next game.

Or, you could just increase your vocabulary.
Unless, of course, you WERE looking for pointers on how to get to know her better.

(Actually, I'd like Johnny to have an inferiority complex...)

Not your fault, but, when your grandmother went to school kids were expected to actually study and learn stuff, and if they did not they were held back and probably got their butts warmed at home for bringing home a bad report card. Now little Jonny gets an A wether he learned anything or not. After all we cant have him getting an inferiority complex.

Find out if there is a Scrabble club in your area, and if there is, go!

Virtually everyone who attends one for more than one session learns quite a lot of pointers.

I think that the most important part of your question was telling us that you play scrabble with your grandmother. I hope my grandkids still want to play scrabble with me when I am 91. And congratualtions to your grandmother.

At 55 I usually beat my children at scrabble, and I beat my grandchildren all the time if I really play seriously - sometimes I let them win (they are very young). Your grandmother probably has much more experience playing scrabble than you do, so you will need to really focus and practice to beat her. She will probably be pleased if you are able to beat her! So here are a few ideas that may help:

Learn the list of all the two letter words, so that you can take advantage of opportunities.

Try to always form more than one word at every turn. Look for those neat spaces where you can form two, three or more words by placing just a few letters.

Buy computer scrabble and play against the computer. This game will also help you take better advantage of playing all seven of your letters.

Invest in a scrabble dictionary and look for unusual words.

Read more, and note short but different words - start making lists.

Browse through a book store and see if you can find a book about scrabble. There are a few of them.

Set up a scrabble board at home and play both sides yourself. Use a scrabble dictionary to help you find the best word to play on every turn. It will improve your skills.

Do the crossword puzzles in newspapers. It will improve your vocabulary and you will learn many new and unusual words.

Continue to play scrabble with your grandmother. The best way to become better at any game that requires strategy and thinking is to play against people better than you.

Best of luck to you and your grandmother.

Try looking at the dictionary or reading more magazines and news articles, that way you will expand your vocabulary. Also, the reason why your grandmother probably beat you is because she is older and she has seen and read alot. No worries, you will catch up soon!

The strategy is to get the double and triple words and letters ... she probably sets you up so she can put her words where they will count the most. Try to put Q's , J's and X's on triple letter scores ... watch how grandma plays ... She may be old but it sounds like she knows her scrabble ... good luck.
