im thinking of starting a chess team 4 HS. i used to play in MS and our MS got 1st in state. my rating when i quit in 9th grade(im rising junior now) was about 1400s. whats the normal rating for a high school competitor in team chess? the ratings im estimating for our team will be 1900, 1500, 1300, 1300, 1100. do we stand a chance? or will some hardcore training be awaiting us this summer?

1100 is not very good. probably the player will be a reserve. for my school, which owns in my country, our ratings are 2039, 2012, 1673 and 1598. we are all in the national team as well. ntt training will help, but not a lot. it is better to play against each other and give each other tips. also, do some research on chess and learn at least 30 different openings(eg. sicilian, gambit, red indian, orangutan(sokolsky opening)). the most important of all is to play against each other wif timing, preferably blitz because it lets u think fast and use ur openings. make sure u can tackle ur opponent's every move. try to read nimzowitsch's books as they have many games of himself against other world-class chess players like fischer and karpov.
may i noe which country u are frm? it will allow me to roughly noe the standard of the other teams frm ur country.

you should try and improve the bottom three on yourr team becasue they will cost your team. you can get a 1400 rating with very little effort as long as you are intelligent and trying to learn. find an intelligent student that is competitive and replace that 1100 person. try to find three that are intelligent and competitive type to replace the bottom three and you will stand a chance. those three play because they started when they were young or something. if they are not total beginners then they will never be good players at the high school level. i say sure form a team and have fun competing and learn team work for your adult life. but if you want to win right away you are in for a struggle with that talent source you are writing about. 1100 and 1300 will have a hard time making the team at some girls military school for grades 6 through 8 to tell you the truth.

I saw masters and 1100s. I started as a sophomore at 1032 and ended as 1412 by graduation. Don't get focused on the numbers. The lower rated has less pressure because he is "supposed to" lose anyway. The higher rated might get caught playing to "not lose" instead of to "win". If that makes sense.
